Art or Rain Gear?

By Alexander Tresniowski/Reported by Wendy Cole

Count on CHRISTO, that eccentric Conceptual artist, to get
people talking. His latest extravaganza, The Umbrellas, a
six-year, $26 million effort, literally opened last week when
1,340 20-ft. blue umbrellas were unfurled along a 12-mile
stretch in Japan, followed by 1,760 yellow umbrellas dotting 18
miles of hills in California. Ironically, rain in Japan delayed
the opening, but in sunny California the umbrellas hit big with
tourists and local merchants. Some area residents, though,
complained about traffic and pollution. Said Christo: "The
project mirrors the people about it."
